Reading Blog
In Ms. Parks' English 3 blog center, students will post blogs about the assigned readings once a week, as well as comment on one or more of their fellow students' blogs. I will post questions or aspects of each reading as an option to think and write about, but it is not required. Students may write about any aspect of the literary work that they find interesting as long as it well thought out and presented. To access the reading blog, click here.
Deep Map Assignment
My deep map has taken the form of a tree. I feel a tree represents me for many reasons. At first glance, a tree appears independent. It stands on the ground lifting itself up with no apparent sustenance to keep it alive. But after learning about the tree, you learn that it relies on the soil below it and the sun above it to survive. The tree has a deep connection with its surroundings. I am the tree. Many times I try to do things on my own, but in the end, I need other people around me to survive. I thrive off of human connections. But like the tree, I pay forward what I am given. The tree takes nutrients from the ground and energy from the sun and rain, and in return to nature, the tree gives shelter to woodland animals and some give fruit to other nature dwellers. I feel that I have a symbiotic relationship with the world. I give and receive within my meaningful relationships.
The roots of the tree represent the things in my life that are important to me. They literally and symbolically keep me rooted in life. The different roots represent my mother, my father, the love of my life, my friends, my faith, and my oneness to nature and the outside world. Without these things in my life, I would wilt and fall over. They keep me strong and upright. They dig deep into the Earth to keep me stable in life. I would not be the person I am without them, and I like the person that I am.
I also gain strength and life from the sun, which represents the higher power that watches over me. The sun is a mysterious thing to me, but I know that it allows me to live and love, and I would not be alive without it. It stays far away in the sky where I can only longingly gander and wonder of its power and beauty.
All of these things in my life make me the person that I am and allow me to express myself. The books growing from my tree represent my freedom to express who I am. The books also represent my passion for literature. The people and things that I love allow me to indulge in the things that I love.
